Drawing Statement
These drawings consider complex systems that strike a balance between the need for order and the imperative for change. Here, a completed drawing is an innovation that keeps the living energy of the mark vibrant, and enough stability to sustain composition.
Like a juggler, the action of these drawings build in momentum and spontaneity with marks building upon marks. By rotating the paper, adding and subtracting marks, and layering marks, the drawings push and pulls themselves into completion. The inherent rawness of the marks doesn’t not take away from the drawings’ expression of sensitivity. The drawings arise organically and spontaneously on the paper, where consideration of negative space serves as a counter weight for the marks suspended as though by gravity in a two dimensional space.
As in juggling, there is that magic moment when the juggler finds the balance point. In that instant the balls in motion become a unified whole, existing in a state of dynamic equilibrium, at which time they cross a threshold of self-organization of parts to a whole. As in juggling the elements and the principles of drawing find a balance point through the artist, where the complex parts come together and flourish as a complex dynamic whole.
